Google Terms of Service

Thu Mar 26, 2009, 5:55 AM
I was just about to register for another Google Gmail account, and as I read the terms of service, I at first thought I must have missunderstood something. After reading them several times, and realizing that a lot of people don't even read these things anymore (especially from known names, such as Google), I decided to share that with you here. Here is an excerpt from Google's Gmail Terms of Service:

11. Content licence from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this licence includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organisations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.

11.3 You understand that Google, in performing the required technical steps to provide the Services to our users, may (a) transmit or distribute your Content over various public networks and in various media; and (b) make such changes to your Content as are necessary to conform and adapt that Content to the technical requirements of connecting networks, devices, services or media. You agree that this licence shall permit Google to take these actions.

Is this possible?
People are agreeing to this?
I inevitably am agreeing to this?

It's worse on Facebook. And it was worse on google as well.

The strange thing is that on Blogger (which uses the Picasa services for the photos) it says that what's mine is mine and not theirs.

They just except people to be too lazy to read the whole thing since it is so much text. Sadly, it works -_-

Yeah, people never read the terms of service, really.. and then when something happens, they go like Omg I never knew I was agreeing to this, I'll sue them all, oops I lost. But yeaa, this is how easy we Internet users are - well, most of us.. :/

well what are you likely to submit that is worthy...its only an email service and they will only *but unlikely* note your contact details, and use adwords to bring up adverts related to your interests

That's just twisted.
Yeah I heard facebook recently changed it's policies and that created a big outcry from the users.

But if Picasa belongs to Google why the different Terms? What rubbish.
